This is a phrase that is very empowering when used correctly. "Standing in your truth" is getting real with yourself about your life. Truth is not negotiable, it simply is. Jesus said, when you know the truth, it will set you free (John 8:32).
However, today in the age of computer technology, and image promotion, things are not always how they appear. This is very true when it comes to our perception, how we see things. The ego is a master at justifying, giving excuses or just plain ignoring the truth, so that it can get its own way. The ego is the false self that has been formed through the years based on past experiences, labels that we or others have put on ourselves. The ego's very identity is based on false perception, how we interpreted events or protected ourselves from people, hurts or events. It's very purpose is its own self-preservation. The truth is very dangerous to the ego.
However many live their lives, ran by their ego and do not even realize that the ego is not them. We are more than our body and more than our thoughts.
Many people live by their emotions, and thoughts. I am not saying we should ignore or suppress them, but the real Us can acknowledge them, but not be ran by them.
The ego is also known by several other names, in scripture it is called the flesh or self, or human nature, in psychology it is called the inner child or ego. It is the self-centered, immature part of us, that was never meant to run our life. It is the part of us, that we created to replace God. The ego is very insecure, and always looking for validation. It takes things very personally and perceives attack in almost everything. The ego is paranoid. Because the ego is immature. These are just a few characteristics of the ego driven life. The person who is driven by their ego, is simply living disconnected from God, and their self. Their relationships are usually unhealthy or at least unbalanced. Their whole life, (finances, relationships, time, etc..) is usually out of balance as well. The egoic centered life, brings frustration, anxiety, guilt, shame, and leads to disease and eventually death. This is because we were not meant to live this way. There is a better way, a higher way to live.
This better way or higher way of living, is living from our heart or Spirit. We will not be rid of the ego, it will be a part of us, until we die to this life, but we do not have to be controlled by it. Ego is easily seen in someone else. I am sure while you were reading the characteristics of the ego above, you thought of specific people who fit them. The trick however is to identify the ego in our life. To be able to recognize the thoughts, attitudes and actions of the ego in our own life. To be able to separate what we know to be true in our hearts from what the ego feels or thinks. To be able to choose and live from the higher truth, and know the difference.
This is standing in your Truth! There are times when we know we should do something, or make a change in our life. However there is a part of us that resists this change and even gives us reasons and excuses why this won't work or can't be done. This is the battle of the ego or our carnal nature with our Spirit or spiritual nature.
I have two great children, but in our home, I am the parent. God has placed me with the responsibility of teaching my children how to live, and until they reach adulthood ( which is way closer than I can believe ) I make the final decisions. It's not about power but responsibility and experience. I know more about life than they do, so it is a smart arrangement.
In our life, we live with this "ego". This "inner child" that we recognize as a part of our life, but we can't allow it to make the decisions and run our life, if we are or do, we are not standing in our Truth, we are headed for crisis!
What areas of your life do you need or want change? Are you standing in your truth in those areas?
